Marco Arcelli: Powering the Future of Energy and Water Infrastructure Through ACWA Global Vision

How the ACWA Power CEO is driving large-scale renewable energy, desalination, and sustainable infrastructure projects across emerging markets

As nations around the world accelerate their transition toward sustainable energy systems and water security, the need for visionary leadership in infrastructure development has never been greater. At the forefront of this transformation is Marco Arcelli, the executive leading ACWA through a period of significant growth and strategic expansion.

Since assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2023, Arcelli has guided ACWA as it strengthens its position as one of the world’s leading developers, investors, and operators of power generation, renewable energy, and desalination projects. His leadership reflects a commitment to advancing sustainable infrastructure while supporting economic development across multiple regions.

Leading a Global Infrastructure Champion

ACWA has established itself as a major player in the global energy and water sectors, developing projects that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including clean energy generation, water scarcity, and sustainable growth.

Under Arcelli’s leadership, the company continued to expand its portfolio and operational footprint, reaching total assets of approximately $16.2 billion during the first half of 2025. Over the same period, ACWA generated revenues of nearly $990.6 million, reflecting the scale and diversity of its infrastructure investments.

These results highlight the company’s growing role in supporting national energy transition strategies and long-term sustainability objectives.

Expanding Power Generation Capacity

A major milestone for ACWA in 2025 was the signing of nine Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) representing a combined 20 gigawatts (GW) of new power generation capacity.

Among these agreements was a landmark 15 GW PPA signed in July with SAPCO and Badeel.

The projects carry a total investment value of approximately $8.3 billion and represent one of the most significant energy development initiatives in the region.

These agreements reinforce ACWA position as a leading infrastructure partner capable of delivering large-scale projects that support economic diversification, energy security, and sustainability goals.

Strengthening Water Security Through Desalination

Beyond energy generation, ACWA continues to play a critical role in addressing global water challenges.

In 2025, the company signed two Water Purchase Agreements (WPAs) that will add approximately 700,000 cubic meters per day of new desalination capacity once operational.

These projects contribute to long-term water security strategies by increasing access to reliable and sustainable freshwater supplies in regions where water scarcity remains a significant concern.

The investments reflect ACWA integrated approach to infrastructure development, recognizing that energy and water are closely connected pillars of sustainable economic growth.

A Global Perspective on Energy Transition

Marco Arcelli’s leadership extends beyond corporate operations and reflects a broader engagement with the future of global energy systems.

He serves on the advisory board of the International Energy Agency, contributing to discussions that shape international energy policy, sustainability initiatives, and long-term infrastructure planning.

His involvement provides valuable insight into emerging industry trends and supports collaboration among governments, institutions, and private-sector stakeholders working toward a more sustainable energy future.

Contributing to Academic and Industry Thought Leadership

In addition to his executive responsibilities, Arcelli serves as an executive fellow at IESE Business School, where he shares leadership insights and practical experience with future business leaders.

His engagement with academia reflects a commitment to knowledge sharing and the development of leadership capabilities that will help address future economic, environmental, and infrastructure challenges.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Infrastructure

Under Marco Arcelli’s leadership, ACWA continues to expand its impact across energy and water infrastructure, delivering projects that support both economic development and environmental sustainability.

From securing major power purchase agreements to increasing desalination capacity and supporting global energy transition initiatives, the company remains focused on creating long-term value through innovation and responsible investment.

As countries seek reliable solutions to meet growing energy and water demands, ACWA integrated approach positions it as a key contributor to a more resilient and sustainable future.

Driving the Next Generation of Energy and Water Solutions

The global transition toward cleaner energy systems and improved water security requires leaders capable of combining vision with execution. Marco Arcelli has emerged as one of those leaders, guiding ACWA through a period of ambitious growth while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.

With a growing portfolio of transformative projects, strategic partnerships, and large-scale infrastructure investments, Arcelli continues to help shape the future of energy and water development on a global scale.

His leadership demonstrates how forward-thinking infrastructure investment can support economic progress, strengthen resource security, and create lasting impact for communities around the world.
