Private and public sector employees to enjoy a long weekend as the UAE marks the beginning of the Islamic year 1447 AH with a paid day off.
In a welcome announcement for residents across the UAE, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has confirmed that Friday, June 27, 2025, will be a paid public holiday for the private sector, marking the Islamic New Year.
The declaration aligns with an earlier statement from the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, which confirmed the same day off for public sector employees. The announcement sets the stage for a long weekend, as the holiday conveniently falls on a Friday.
The Islamic New Year, also known as Ra’s As-Sanah Al-Hijriyah, signifies the start of the Islamic lunar calendar year 1447 AH. It commemorates the Hijrah — the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This journey marks a pivotal moment in Islamic history and the beginning of a new era in the Muslim faith.
While not celebrated as extensively as Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, the Islamic New Year holds deep spiritual significance. In the UAE, it is recognized as an official public holiday, allowing citizens and residents alike a moment of reflection and rest.
Looking ahead, the next expected public holiday in the UAE calendar is Mawlid Al Nabawi, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), anticipated to fall on Thursday, September 4, 2025, pending moon-sighting confirmation. The year will conclude with Commemoration Day and National Day, observed on December 2 and 3.
As the UAE marks the beginning of 1447 AH, the extended weekend offers a meaningful pause for spiritual contemplation, family time, and relaxation — a thoughtful start to the new Islamic year.
